JEWEL
One Word, So Many Meanings
In this, our premiere issue of JEWEL, it’s not so much that we seek to carve out a niche for ourselves, but rather to fill a void. A visit to a newsstand or bookstore leaves us wondering what magazines are available that cater to today’s savvy, chic woman on the go. And that’s where JEWEL comes in. Our close-knit staff, led by our editorial consultant, Dawn M. Baskerville (who has worked in an editorial management capacity for InStyle, Savoy, Heart & Soul, and Real Health) and managing editor Kenya N. Byrd (whose work has been featured in Essence, Vibe, Savoy, and TV Guide), works tirelessly to provide a publication that takes the latest entertainment news, the hippest fashion trends, and the hottest items on the shopping scene, then wraps it all up in one beautiful package—just for you.
Here at JEWEL, we strive to be different. Unlike other women’s magazines that merely bring you whatever stars who happen to be in heavy rotation at the time, we take pleasure in focusing on noted celebrities you might not get to see as often, such as our premiere covergirl, the fabulous Nia Long. Gracious yet candid, Ms. Long gives us her take on everything from President Bush to the rumors of her romantic involvement with superstar rapper 50 Cent. Her engaging words are complemented by her gorgeous pictorial, displaying the blend of style and substance that we hope will become our trademark.
Plus, we bring you Yaya, the America’s Next Top Model runner-up whom many felt should have won. And what woman’s magazine would be complete without men? That’s why we’re gladly serving you a hunk in Boris Kodjoe. The handsome star of Soul Food, The Gospel, and the upcoming sequel to Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea’s Family Reunion, gives the ladies a peek into his personal and professional life.
And that’s not all. There’s so much uncharted territory for you ladies to explore that I can’t possibly cover it all here, so just kick back and enjoy the
cornucopia of culture that is JEWEL, the magazine for every lady who knows she’s a gem.
